3 Words to Guide Your Year (It’s Not Too Late!)

Instead of setting a traditional New Year’s resolution, I love choosing three meaningful words to guide my year. It’s kind of like setting a Sankalpa, or intention, in yoga.

Chris Brogan introduced me to this idea—here’s his video on Three Words for 2025, and I’ve been doing it since 2018. It’s simple, powerful, and helps me focus on what really matters to me.

Tips for Choosing Your 3 Words

Before you Start – Get Grounded

One of my favourite ways to get grounded its through breathwork. Try Alternate Nostril Breathing to help settle thoughts and clear your head while choosing your words of intention,

I shared more about this in last week’s email, and I just made a video you can check out here – How to: Alternate Nostril Breathing.

It’s such a great practice to bring balance and focus!

When choosing your three words, consider these things:

  • What words can you use that would inspire and guide your success?
  • How will these words help you make a decision?
  • What qualities do you want to cultivate in your life?

My Words for 2025

This year, my words are:

✨ Leap – I tend to overthink things (anyone else?). This year, I want to stop analyzing every detail and just go for it. Less hesitation, more action!

✨ Delight – Life is too short to take everything seriously. I want to laugh more, find joy in little things, and soak up moments of happiness every day.

✨ Dare – I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone. New adventures, saying yes more, and embracing the unknown with courage.

How to Use your 3 Words

Once you’ve chosen your words, be sure to use them! Here are some simple ways to weave them into your daily life:

  • Create a wallpaper for your phone to keep your words top of mind (here’s mine).
  • Write them out daily. There’s something about the physical act of writing (pen & paper) that helps solidify and internalize them.
  • When faced with a decision, return to your words to help choose the path that best aligns with your intentions.

It took me a little longer than usual to settle on my words this year, but hey, February is still a great time to set intentions 🙂 And now that I have them, I’m excited to move forward with purpose.

What about you? Do you have a similar practice? Maybe a Sankalpa to help shape your year? I’d love to hear!

Tip:  If you’re looking for inspiration, try choosing words that make you feel empowered, grounded, or excited about what’s ahead.
