Bringing Playfulness to Your Yoga Practice (and Beyond!)

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about bringing more playfulness into my yoga practice—and life. It’s so easy to get caught up in approaching everything with a serious mindset (totally me…). But what if we embraced a little more curiosity and lightheartedness?

This reminded me of something that happened earlier today. I was painting my fence—not exactly the most thrilling task—but what made it surprisingly enjoyable was the help of my neighbors and friends.

As we painted, we chatted, laughed, and had coffee together. What started as a chore turned into something fun, thanks to a little lightheartedness and connection.

It got me thinking: this is exactly the kind of playfulness we can bring into all areas of our lives, including our yoga practice.

One of the intentions I love most from my new workbook of yoga themes (Pose & Purpose), focuses on embracing playfulness.

Intention: Cultivate a Sense of Playfulness

When we bring joy and creativity to our movement, we let go of rigidity and open up to new possibilities. Plus, yoga doesn’t always have to be serious, right? It can be fun!

Why focus on playfulness?

Play encourages creativity, makes our practice more engaging, and invites us to explore rather than perform. In yoga, it’s easy to get caught up in “doing it right.” But what if we gave ourselves permission to wobble, fall, and even laugh when a pose doesn’t go as planned?

Here’s how you can bring the spirit of playfulness into your practice—and life:

Play On the Mat

Try playful poses like Crow Pose (Bakasana) or Tree (Vrksasana). In these balance postures, give yourself permission to fall, laugh, and try again. Play with small adjustments—how does it feel when you shift your weight slightly? What happens if you soften your face or jaw? Explore your body with curiosity and a smile, rather than striving for perfection.

Play Off the Mat

What’s one thing you can approach with curiosity and playfulness today? Maybe it’s trying something new at work, dancing around in the kitchen (my fave), learning a new recipe, or taking a spontaneous day trip.

A playful mindset can transform everyday moments into something more joyful and spontaneous!

I’d love to hear how this intention resonates with you. How can you bring more play into your yoga practice—or into your life? Send me a message and share—I’d love to know 🙂
