This week, I spoke to two close friends on separate occasions. About how the world feels in a state of flux. Unpredictable and kind of scary. Both offered similar wisdom: to remember that things are rarely black and white. They are usually more complex.
It got me thinking about resiliency. We imagine it as strength. But maybe it is also complex. Perhaps it involves finding balance, and perspective, and choosing an uplifting path.
Reflections on Resilience
Resiliency invites us to face difficulties with grace – to be adaptable when the road gets bumpy. To stand in what we believe even when others don’t stand with us.
Yoga Poses for Resilience
Let’s feel for resilience as we do a couple of sun salutations. Cultivate a sense of strength, balance, perspective, and hope as you move through the poses.
1. Strength
Plank Pose: As you transition into Plank, focus on engaging your core and holding steady. Emphasize the strength required to hold the pose. Let each breath remind you that you can face difficulties with determination and courage. You could mentally repeat a mantra like, “I am strong” or “I can face whatever comes my way with grace.”
2. Balance
Forward Fold (Uttanasana): As you fold forward, feel the grounding sensation while allowing tension to release. This posture embodies the idea that resilience isn’t just about pushing forward. It is also about surrendering and letting go when needed. Focus on balance as both a physical and mental practice.
3. Perspective
Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): Use this pose as a chance to reset your perspective. Notice how an inversion shifts your viewpoint, literally and metaphorically. Find a steady breath and let it ground you. Focus on the stretch along your back body as a reminder that resilience also involves flexibility and openness.
4. Hope
Extended Mountain Pose: As you reach your arms overhead, imagine you are reaching for something greater. Your highest self, your aspirations, or simply a moment of peace. Feel the expansive stretch as a reminder of your potential. Embrace the uplifting sensation.
Do a few sun salutations on your own or follow along with this video.
Let’s continue to grow and spread hope together.
